Full History
Pocket telescope of Galilean type. The body of the telescope is composed of pasteboard covered with green - stained fish - skin, with the objective lens retained by a wood, brass and (?) silver mount. The eyepiece is also of pasteboard and its lens ( now absent ) was similarly held in place by a wood, brass and (?) silver mount.
Length of pasteboard tube ( including silver mounts ) comprising body : 48 mm.
External diameter of pasteboard body : 40 mm.
Length of eyepiece : 46 mm.
External diameter of pasteboard tube of eyepiece : 35 mm.
Diameter of objective lens : 37 mm.
Surviving with the telescope is its cylindrical, shagreen - covered wooden case, although this lacks its top and its bottom. Its height ( as preserved ) is 65 mm and its external diameter is 50 mm.
