Family Adventure

Indoor & Outdoor Play

A small outdoor play area (suitable for Key Stage 1) with timber climbing frames and animals is located next to the Orangery picnic area. In the first courtyard of the historic stable block we have an undercover imaginative play area that includes a miniature carriage with rocking horses and dressing up so your little ones can let off steam whatever the weather. For families visiting the house, we have a selection of new activities from object handling boxes to a children's dress-up room and an activity trail to keep the little ones entertained. Visitors with small children can borrow one of our new and exciting Explorer Bags, suitable for early years, the bags contain resources to help children explore the museum and engage with history. Use the I SPY Cards to go on a treasure hunt around the museum and peak through the telescope to see what you can spot!

Because of the risk of accidents to babies and young children it is not possible to take large prams, pushchairs or baby back carriers around the house and these must be left in the entrance hall. Front slings are permitted and these along with reins for toddlers are available for loan from the entrance hall.

The Grounds

Here at Burton Constable Hall we know how much kids like to explore and play. So, we have two perfect trails for you and your family!

Explore the historic parkland at Burton Constable with the Wildlife Sculpture Trail. Each sculpture highlights a different animal that can be spotted around the parkland and grounds including Hares, Woodpeckers and Barn Owls. The new Parkland Waymarker Trail highlights a different parkland feature, for example the Ha-ha, Dog Kennels and the Orangery. Many of the ten waymarkers have a spyhole and all of them feature a rubbing disc. Take a rubbing from each of the waymarkers to spell out the word HOLDERNESS.

Both trails are just under 3km long and take approximately 45 minutes to complete. Suitable footwear is recommended for walking through the parkland. Please follow the countryside code by closing gates behind you and be aware of grazing animals. Purchase your trail sheets and trail blazer badges (30p per trail) from the ticket desk located within the gift shop.

With over 300 acres of parkland, woodlands and gardens why not make your own fun? Families are welcome to bring along frisbees, soft balls and similar outdoor games.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a fantastic way to see more of the Parkland and Grounds at Burton Constable Hall. You can now borrow our new  Orienteering Packs for free on the day of your visit.

It's a fun and challenging outdoor activity for the whole family; combining walking or running with decision making and adventure!

Ask at the Ticket Desk for more details.

Toilet and Baby Changing Facilities

All toilet and baby changing facilities can be found in the stable courtyard. Unfortunately there are no public toilets in the house.
